One day after winning the Class 1A team No. 1 singles tennis championship, St. Andrew’s senior Tony Russell had the opportunity to play for the state’s overall single championship.
Russell’s bid fell just short when he lost to Sagemont’s Jake Albo 6-2, 6-4 for the overall title on Friday.
“It was hard coming through the team setting and playing for the individual title on Friday,” Saint Andrew’s coach Scott Williams, said of Russell.
On Thursday, Russell helped the Scots to the school’s first boys team tennis title in 22 years.
Sagemont also won the overall doubles title when Albo and Emilio Escobar teamed up to defeat Brett Landau and Christopher Perrigan of Tallahassee Maclay 6-1, 6-7 (4) 6-3.
